Baltic states among top 5 countries for studies at UK universities
The number of students from the Baltics choosing the United Kingdom as a study destination ranks the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia)in the top 5 countries in the world. Annually more than 7 000 young people enter Bachelor programmes at British universities and university colleges.
According to the Times Good University 2014 the biggest number of EU students came from Germany (7288). The second place occupies the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) with the total number of 7201 students.
In the global scale this statistics looks as follows: China – 32112 students, Malaysia (10810, Hong Kong 8881, Germany 7288, Baltic states 7201. Taking into account the population of the Baltic states (slightly over 7 mln people) the data is even more impressive!
During the last several years there is also a growing interest from international students - non-residents of the Baltics and other EU countries, who obtained residence permits in the region, mainly in Latvia. The main reason of the demand is an investment attracting programme introduced 4 years ago and offering an opportunity for non-EU residents to obtain temporary and permanent European Union residence permits in exchange to investments in real estate, businesses and banking sector. Since 2012 this programme has led to influx in Latvia of wealthy and middle class residents and their family members from the neighbouring countries and regions like Russia, Belarus, Ukraine as well as Kazakhstan and China. The number of issued residence permits exceeded 10 000 so far.
Another category of international students in the Baltics are non - EU residents looking for advice about their future study perspectives by means of “word of mouth” recommendations and through the attendance of local educational fairs such as “Skola“, “Teeviit”, “Studijos” and the Nr 1 study abroad fair “Days of International Education” the next sessions of which is taking place on 08-11 October, 2015 in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
